Thank You!
Friday 3rd October, 2025
Dear Friends,
One month ago today, the Baton of Hope arrived in Northern Ireland for the very first time, marking a significant and historic occasion. Bringing the Baton to Newry and the surrounding areas required considerable planning and commitment, and we wish to acknowledge with gratitude the hard work of the team at PIPS Hope and Support, along with the invaluable support of our partners and volunteers.
We also wish to extend our deepest thanks to the Baton of Hope Foundation for granting us the privilege of hosting this remarkable event – the first time it has been held outside of mainland UK. Their trust and partnership made it possible for our communities to be part of such an historic and meaningful journey, and we are truly honoured to have played a role in sharing its message of hope and remembrance.
On Wednesday 3rd September, the Baton travelled through Crossmaglen, Cullyhanna, Newtownhamilton, Keady, Camlough, Bessbrook, Kilkeel, Rostrevor, Warrenpoint and Banbridge, before its final journey to Newry. At every stage, it was carried with pride and greeted with respect.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the baton bearers, whose courage and dedication gave meaning to each step, and to the local teams and communities who lined the streets to show their support. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the schools, sports clubs, local businesses, community and voluntary groups who embraced the Baton’s journey and played such an important role in ensuring it was warmly welcomed throughout the district. We are equally grateful to the speakers at each of the venues, whose words of reflection and encouragement brought depth and meaning to every gathering.
We also wish to place on record our thanks to the volunteers, whose tireless efforts with logistics and organisation ensured the day was delivered seamlessly, and to the charities and support services who joined us at the market in Newry Leisure Centre and at Havelock Park in Banbridge. Their presence provided an invaluable opportunity to share information, connect with individuals, and highlight the wide range of supports available within our communities.
A special word of thanks must also go to our sponsors: the Public Health Agency, Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Southern GP Federation Support Unit, Newry Mourne and Down District Council, and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. Their support was vital in helping us bring this event to life.
The Baton of Hope is a powerful symbol of remembrance, awareness, and unity. Its journey through our area demonstrated the strength of our collective commitment to suicide prevention and mental health support. Together, we showed that Newry and the surrounding districts are places where compassion, resilience, and solidarity continue to thrive.
One month on, we remain honoured to have facilitated this important milestone and extend our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to its success.
